About the School
Founded in 1951 by the Josephite Fathers and Brothers, St. Augustine is an all-male, Catholic college-preparatory school. The Purple Knights won the legal battles that desegregated high school sports in Louisiana.
Its legendary “Marching 100” became the first Black high school band to march on Mardi Gras Day in 1967 and later performed for Pope John Paul II. St. Aug produced the first Black male National Merit Scholars in the South.

Legacy
St. Augustine has produced National Merit Scholars, Presidential Scholars, and civic leaders — including former New Orleans Mayor Sidney Barthelemy (Class of 1960). Its bands, athletics, and academic tradition remain a cornerstone of New Orleans culture.
