About the School
George Washington Carver High School was established in the late 1950s in the Desire neighborhood of the Upper Ninth Ward. Its original Higgins Boulevard building was designed by Curtis and Davis — the same architects behind the Superdome.
Destroyed by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Carver was rebuilt and reopened in a new building in 2016. The metal rams that stood outside since its founding were preserved, and its devoted “Ramily” alumni fought to bring the school home.
