About the School
Opened in 1964, Alfred Lawless was the first high school in the Lower Ninth Ward. It was named for educator Alfred Lawless, who fought for the right of Black children in New Orleans to a full education.
The school served about 900 students before Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Its campus was among the most heavily damaged in the city and never reopened as a high school — but the Pythians live on through their graduates.
