The Valley Gets the Weekend

From Friday, February 19 through Sunday, February 21, 2027, the NBA's All-Star Weekend takes over downtown Phoenix — Rising Stars on Friday, All-Star Saturday Night on Saturday, and the All-Star Game itself on Sunday the 21st at the Suns' downtown arena, now called Mortgage Matchup Center and still known to most of the Valley as Footprint Center.

It is Phoenix's third All-Star Game, after 1975 at the Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum and 2009 at the same downtown building under a different name. And it lands in the final week of Black History Month, with more than a hundred thousand visitors looking for somewhere to eat, drink, dance and shop.

Oddusee Phoenix built this page so that money has somewhere Black to land. Everything on the map below is a real, currently operating Valley business, sorted by how far it sits from the arena — walkable, one light rail stop, a short ride, or worth the drive.

A Walkable Black History Route

  • Start at the George W. Carver Museum on East Washington, two blocks from the arena.
  • Walk east to Eastlake Park, the center of Black civic life in Phoenix for a century.
  • Stop at the Swindall Tourist Inn, where Black travelers stayed when downtown hotels would not have them.
  • Finish at Tanner Chapel A.M.E., where Dr. King spoke, then loop back through Grassrootz Bookstore.
  • The whole route is under two miles and lands you back downtown before tip-off.
Where to Stay

Sleeping Downtown

Straight talk: we have not been able to verify a currently operating Black-owned hotel in downtown Phoenix. Rather than pad this section, here is what we do know — and an open invitation.

Stay Inside the Light Rail Corridor

Downtown hotels around the Convention Center and Copper Square put you within a ten-minute walk of the arena. Anything on the Valley Metro Rail line between midtown and Tempe works almost as well, and costs less.

Book Early, Read the Fine Print

All-Star weekend rates surge and multi-night minimums are normal. Lock in refundable rates now and re-check in the fall — inventory opens up once blocks are released.

The History: Swindall Tourist Inn

Before 1964, Black visitors to Phoenix stayed at the Swindall Tourist Inn in Eastlake, one of the few Green Book listings in the city. It still stands. It is worth seeing on your way in.

Black-Owned Lodging? Tell Us.

If you run a Black-owned hotel, bed and breakfast, or short-term rental in the Valley, submit it below. We will verify it and put it on this map before the weekend.

Getting In

Tickets

All-Star ticketing is run by the NBA and the Suns, not by us. Here is how it generally works, and what has not been announced yet.

1

Official Channels First

NBA & Phoenix Suns

All-Star tickets are released through the NBA and the host team, usually as weekend packages and through season-ticket-holder priority before any general sale. Watch the official All-Star page and the Suns' own announcements.

2

Verified Resale

Ticketmaster · SeatGeek · StubHub

Most fans end up on verified resale. Prices for All-Star Sunday run high and move fast. Anything priced well below the market is a red flag.

3

The Free Stuff

Fan events · Details TBA

All-Star weekends normally include a multi-day fan festival at the host city's convention center along with free and low-cost community events. Phoenix's lineup and venues have not been announced. We will post them here as they are confirmed.

4

Watch It Somewhere Black-Owned

The realistic plan

Most people in the Valley that weekend will never set foot in the arena, and that is fine. Every lounge and sports bar above will have it on. Spend the ticket money on a table instead.

Questions

All-Star FAQ

Friday, February 19 through Sunday, February 21, 2027. Rising Stars is Friday, All-Star Saturday Night is Saturday, and the All-Star Game is Sunday the 21st. Tip time has not been announced.
Mortgage Matchup Center, 201 E Jefferson St in downtown Phoenix — the Suns and Mercury arena, known as Footprint Center until 2025 and as PHX Arena, US Airways Center and America West Arena before that.
Twice. The 1975 game was at the Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum, and the 2009 game was in the same downtown building the 2027 game will use, under a previous name. 2027 is Phoenix's third.
Valley Metro Rail. The Washington/Central Ave and Jefferson/1st Ave stations are at the arena's doorstep, and the line runs from midtown Phoenix through downtown to Tempe and Mesa. Driving downtown on All-Star Saturday is the hard way.
Yes — it falls in the last full week of February 2027. That timing is part of why this guide exists: the weekend's spending can land in Black-owned Phoenix instead of passing straight through it.
Every business on the map is either verified through our Phoenix directory or approved by hand after it is submitted. Directory membership alone is never proof — we check ownership against the business's own materials before a listing is flagged Black-owned. If we cannot verify it, we say so rather than guess.
Use the submission form on the map above. Submissions open February 5, 2027 and close on All-Star Sunday. Every one is reviewed by hand, and approved businesses also become permanent listings in the Oddusee Phoenix directory — not just for the weekend.
Downtown near the Convention Center if you want to walk to everything, or anywhere on the light rail line if you want to pay less. See the Where to Stay section above.
