Yellow Pocahontas — The History
7th Ward · Tootie Montana Legacy

The Yellow Pocahontas are one of the most storied Black Masking Indian tribes, forever tied to the legendary Big Chief Allison “Tootie” Montana of the 7th Ward. Tootie masked for more than 50 years and was known as the “Chief of Chiefs” for his leadership and his breathtaking, sculptural suits.
Tootie Montana is credited with helping turn the tradition away from violence and toward artistry, where tribes now battle to see who is “prettiest” rather than who is toughest. His three-dimensional beadwork changed the art form forever.
After Tootie’s passing in 2005, his son Big Chief Darryl Montana carried on the Yellow Pocahontas name, continuing a family legacy that stretches back generations and stands at the very heart of the culture.
