Wild Mohicans — The History

Westbank, New Orleans

The Wild Mohicans are a Black Masking Indian tribe from the Westbank of New Orleans. Along with tribes like the Mohawk Hunters of Algiers, they keep the tradition strong on the far side of the Mississippi River.

Each year the Wild Mohicans sew elaborate suits by hand and take to the streets on Mardi Gras morning, proving that the culture belongs to every part of the city.

Their feathers, beads, and chants carry the same pride and history as the Uptown and Downtown tribes, honoring the ancestors who built the tradition.
