The Mohawk Hunters are the longest-running Black Masking Indian tribe on the Westbank, masking through the streets of Algiers since the late 1930s. The tradition was started by the family of current Big Chief Tyrone Casby, whose great-uncle Frank Casby first brought it to Algiers.

Separated from the rest of the tribes by the Mississippi River, the Mohawk Hunters have kept the culture strong in Algiers for generations, proving that the tradition belongs to the whole city, not just the Uptown and Downtown wards.

Big Chief Tyrone Casby, who has also served as a school principal, has masked for over 50 years and is a proud ambassador for the Westbank’s place in the Mardi Gras Indian tradition.
