The Golden Comanches are an Uptown New Orleans Black Masking Indian tribe led by Big Chief Juan Pardo, who has masked for around twenty years. They are known for their bright, detailed suits and a strong presence on Mardi Gras morning.

In recent years the Golden Comanches have started their Mardi Gras Day from Tipitina’s, the famed Uptown music hall, sometimes connecting with the band Galactic and bringing the tradition to new audiences.

Like all tribes, the Golden Comanches spend the whole year hand-sewing their beaded suits. On Carnival morning they take to the streets to meet other gangs and show who is “prettiest,” carrying forward one of the city’s most sacred African American traditions.
