7th Ward Hunters — The History
7th Ward, New Orleans

The 7th Ward Hunters are a Black Masking Indian tribe from the historic 7th Ward of New Orleans, a neighborhood long central to the Mardi Gras Indian and Creole traditions.
On Carnival morning the tribe sings and dances through the streets, meeting other 7th Ward gangs in the call-and-response ritual that defines the culture.
Their hand-sewn suits and deep chants keep alive a tradition that stretches back well over a century, passed down from chief to chief and family to family.
