New Birth helped launch a generation of players who went on to shape the modern New Orleans brass scene.
Established 1990 · New Orleans
New Generation, Old Roots.
The New Birth Brass Band was founded around 1990 by a group of young players including bass drummer Tanio Hingle, tuba player Kerwin James, and trumpeter James Andrews — many of them coming up in the Treme tradition.
New Birth kept one foot in the old-line sound and one in the new, and served as a launching pad for players who would go on to shape the whole scene. Their music remains a staple of second lines and jazz funerals.
