After co-founding Rebirth Brass Band in 1983, trumpeter Kermit Ruffins struck out on his own in 1992 to form the Barbecue Swingers — a traditional jazz quintet that pairs his two great loves, New Orleans music and New Orleans cooking. Yes, he really does cook barbecue at the shows.
For years his Thursday night at Vaughn’s in the Bywater was one of the best-kept-not-so-secret gigs in town. These days you’ll find Kermit holding court at his own place, the Treme Mother-in-Law Lounge — one of the city’s true musical ambassadors.
