Young Seminole Hunters — The History

9th Ward · Big Chief Demond Melancon

The Young Seminole Hunters are led by Big Chief Demond Melancon, a 9th Ward masking Indian who is also an internationally recognized visual artist. His hand-beaded suits are considered fine art and have been exhibited around the world.

Melancon has spent decades masking and sewing, and he uses his art to tell the story of the Black Masking tradition and its deep African roots. Every suit is built by hand, one bead at a time, over the course of a year.

On Mardi Gras morning and Super Sunday, the Young Seminole Hunters take to the streets, blending deep tradition with breathtaking artistry that has helped bring the culture worldwide recognition.
