Fi Yi Yi & the Mandingo Warriors

Fi Yi Yi & the Mandingo Warriors — The History

7th Ward · Big Chief Victor Harris

Spirit of Fi Yi Yi and the Mandingo Warriors, led by Big Chief Victor Harris of the 7th Ward, is one of the most spiritually powerful and African-centered of all the Black Masking Indian tribes. Victor Harris began masking as a young man with Yellow Pocahontas under Tootie Montana before founding his own spirit in 1984.

Unlike many tribes that draw on Native American imagery, Fi Yi Yi’s suits reach back directly to Africa, with masks and designs that honor the ancestors. The name Fi Yi Yi comes from a chant, and the Big Chief is said to carry a spirit that comes over him when he masks.

Big Chief Victor Harris is recognized as one of the longest continuously masking Indians in New Orleans history, a true keeper of the flame whose devotion has inspired generations.
