The Original Pinstripe Brass Band got its name in 1977, when a crew of musicians — hired to back Doc Paulin at the Endymion Mardi Gras ball — all showed up in pinstripe suits. Formed the same year as the Dirty Dozen, they became part of the brass band revival, drawing players from the Olympia, Chosen Few, and Doc Paulin’s bands.
Mostly Uptown men from the 11th and 12th Wards, the Pinstripes fold R&B, jazz, blues, gospel, and soul into their sound. Since 1978 they’ve been a fixture at the Zulu Mardi Gras ball and parade, and at the second lines of clubs like the Scene Boosters and Young Men Olympians.
