Street Queens.
The Original Pinettes Brass Band was formed in 1991 by band director Jeffery Herbert at St. Mary’s Academy, a Catholic girls’ school in New Orleans. He named them the Pinettes — a feminine spin on his own Pinstripe Brass Band — and they became, and remain, the city’s only all-female brass band.
In 2013 the Pinettes won the Red Bull “Street Kings” brass band competition — beating three men’s bands and turning it into “Street Queens.” They have since shared stages with Arcade Fire and Katy Perry, carrying New Orleans brass around the world.
