The Sound

By adding bebop and funk to the traditional brass band in 1977, the Dirty Dozen opened the door for the entire modern brass sound.

Nearly five decades of touring and collaborations have made the Dozen international ambassadors of New Orleans music.

They Broke the Mold.

The Dirty Dozen Brass Band came together in 1977 and rewrote the rulebook. By folding bebop, funk, and R&B into the traditional brass band, they lit the spark for the entire modern brass movement — every funk-brass band that followed owes them a debt.

Nearly fifty years and countless collaborations later — from Dizzy Gillespie to Modern jazz greats — the Dozen are elder statesmen of the sound, still touring and still funky.

The band that reinvented brass.
