John Cornyn has represented Texas in the U.S. Senate since 2002 and previously served as Texas Attorney General and on the Texas Supreme Court. Seeking a fifth term in 2026, he was forced into a runoff and lost the Republican nomination to Attorney General Ken Paxton on May 26, 2026, taking 36 percent to Paxton 64 percent. He is the first sitting Texas senator to lose renomination since 1970. His term runs through January 2027.
