Founded in 1873 by freedmen and freedwomen, it is the oldest African American Methodist church in Dallas and the last surviving institution of the original North Dallas and State-Thomas Freedman’s Town. Huston-Tillotson University traces its 1876 origins to this congregation.

The Collegiate Gothic Revival red-brick sanctuary, built between 1913 and 1927 partly by congregants’ own hands, is a National Register-listed landmark. It remains an active congregation offering worship, arts programming and community ministries in the Arts District.
