For decades the only high school for Black students in Fort Worth, I.M. Terrell was a cornerstone of the city’s African American community and produced jazz greats Ornette Coleman, Dewey Redman and John Carter. It closed in 1973 under desegregation and reopened in 2019 as a restored magnet academy.
