Eric Johnson is a Dallas native and former Texas state representative who served in the Legislature for nearly a decade before winning the mayor's office in 2019. He was re-elected in 2023 with over 90 percent of the vote, and in September 2023 switched from the Democratic to the Republican Party, making Dallas the largest US city with a Republican mayor. He holds degrees from Harvard, Princeton, and the University of Pennsylvania law school.
What the Mayor does for you
Presides over the City Council, sets committee assignments, and represents Dallas publicly. Dallas uses a council-manager system, so day-to-day operations – police, fire, streets, sanitation, permits – are run by the City Manager, whom the Council hires. 4-year term, 2-term limit. Next mayoral election: May 2027.
