By the late 1940s Dawson Park served as an unofficial town square for Portland’s Albina Black community and a gathering point for civil-rights speeches and marches, including a 1963 Medgar Evers memorial march. Robert F. Kennedy spoke here during the civil-rights era.

The park’s gazebo incorporates the salvaged cupola of the demolished Hill Block Building, and photo-etched story boulders interpret local Black history, music and Black-owned newspapers. The park is free and open to the public.
