Founded in 1964, the Black Repertory Group calls itself the oldest African American theatrical organization of its kind in the nation. Rooted in a mission to teach Black history through the works of Black playwrights and artists, it has anchored South Berkeley for over 60 years.

The theater stages mainstage productions, hosts youth training and serves as a community cultural gathering space, and has been associated with performers such as Whoopi Goldberg and Danny Glover. It is generally open Tuesday through Sunday.
