Established in 1890, Beth Eden is one of the oldest and most influential historically Black Baptist churches in Oakland, nicknamed the Mother Church because so many of its pastors founded other congregations. It has been a center of West Oakland Black community life for more than 130 years.

The congregation founded the Fanny Jackson Coppin Club in 1899 and provided shelter and meals during the Great Depression. Its current sanctuary was completed in 1982, and the church remains an active congregation.
