A small HBCU founded in 1924 that trained many leaders of the Nashville civil rights movement, including John Lewis, Bernard Lafayette and James Bevel. Its students were central to the sit-ins and Freedom Rides.

Griggs Hall, on the U.S. Civil Rights Trail, is where these young activists studied and organized. The college remains an active, accredited institution recognized for its movement legacy.
