A historic Black Methodist congregation dating to 1865 that played a key role in the civil rights movement. In 1958 James Lawson led nonviolence workshops here, and in 1961 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. convened the annual SCLC meeting at the church.

The church carries a Tennessee historical marker and is a stop on the U.S. Civil Rights Trail, and it continues to serve its North Nashville community. Visitors can view the exterior and marker.
