Established in 1876, Zion is one of the oldest Black-owned cemeteries in Memphis, purchased by a Black benevolent society so African Americans could bury their dead with dignity during segregation. Thousands of Black Memphians, including Reconstruction-era figures, are interred here.

The Zion Community Project leads ongoing restoration and documentation of the historic grounds. It is accessible to the public, with volunteer-led preservation and periodic heritage tours.
