Black arts and culture space in Los Angeles, California
Ted Watkins, who walked to Watts from Meridian, Mississippi at 13 during the Great Migration, founded WLCAC in 1965 as a labor-backed community development body. After the 1992 uprising destroyed its headquarters, WLCAC rebuilt as a seven-acre "healing arts" campus that includes murals, sculpture and a civil rights exhibit that walks visitors through slavery and its aftermath. MudTown Farms, its urban agriculture site, is part of the same operation. Tours are available and worth arranging in advance.
