Black history landmark in Los Angeles, California
Opened November 21, 1947 as the Broadway-Crenshaw Center, one of the first regional shopping centers in America designed around the car, with Streamline Moderne buildings by Paul R. Williams and Albert B. Gardner. Since the mid-1960s it has been the commercial and social center of Black Los Angeles, home to the Museum of African American Art, the Leimert Park Book Fair, the African American Santa tradition and Pan African Film Festival screenings. Harridge Development bought it in 2021 and broke ground on a mixed-use redevelopment on March 5, 2026, so much of the mall is in transition.
