Historic Black church in Los Angeles, California
Founded in 1945 and known as the Church of the Bells, Holman anchors the West Adams corridor and has been one of the most politically engaged Black congregations in the city, long associated with civil rights organizing and, under Rev. James Lawson Jr., with the nonviolence tradition he brought from the Southern movement. Its mid-century sanctuary on Adams Boulevard is a landmark in its own right. The church marks 81 years of ministry in 2026 and runs a community development corporation alongside worship.
