Founded in 1977 and opened at its Exposition Park home in 1984, CAAM is one of the nation’s first African American museums fully supported by a state. It researches, collects and interprets the art, history and culture of African Americans with an emphasis on California and the western United States.

Visitors find rotating fine-art exhibitions, historical collections, a sculpture court and public programs. Admission, exhibitions and events are always free, and it sits in Exposition Park near the Metro rail.
