Urban One, Inc. is the largest African American owned and operated broadcasting company in the United States. Founded in 1980 as Radio One by Cathy Hughes, who serves as chairperson, and led by her son Alfred C. Liggins III as CEO, the Silver Spring, Maryland company controls roughly 90 percent of its own voting stock, keeping ownership firmly in Black hands.

Urban One operates dozens of radio stations across 13 major African American markets under its Radio One division, along with cable networks TV One and CLEO TV, the iOne Digital platform, and an 80 percent stake in Reach Media, the syndication company founded by Tom Joyner that carries The Rickey Smiley Morning Show, The D.L. Hughley Show, The Morning Hustle and Get Up Mornings with Erica Campbell. The company says its platforms reach 82 percent of Black America.
