Built in 1836, St. John’s is Cleveland’s oldest religious building and is known as Station Hope, a documented refuge point on the Underground Railroad. Freedom seekers sheltered here while awaiting safe passage by ship across Lake Erie to Canada.

Though no longer used for regular worship, the National Register landmark is the venue for Cleveland Public Theatre’s annual Station Hope celebration honoring the city’s social-justice heritage. Public access is primarily through that event and organized history tours.
