Home of the former Penn School, founded in 1862 as one of the first schools in the South for formerly enslaved people, and a cornerstone of Gullah Geechee heritage. It later served as a retreat for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the civil rights movement.

The York W. Bailey Museum’s Education for Freedom exhibit tells the Penn School’s history, and the campus is a National Historic Landmark District in the greater Lowcountry near Beaufort. The welcome center is generally open Tuesday through Saturday with admission.
