Oddusee · New Orleans
Organized around 1990 by snare drummer Benny Jones Sr., a Dirty Dozen co-founder, with 'Uncle' Lionel Batiste as assistant leader, to keep the traditional Tremé repertoire of hymns, dirges and street standards alive. The band was a fixture of second lines and jazz funerals, appeared as itself in HBO's 'Treme,' and received a 2006 National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. Its recording 'Gimme My Money Back' was released on Arhoolie. Founded: 1990 Residency: Sunday early-evening shows at d.b.a., 618 Frenchmen St. (typically 6 PM; confirm on the d.b.a. calendar)
