An offshoot of the Young Olympia Brass Band, New Birth came together in the mid-1990s around trumpeter James Andrews with drummers Cayetano 'Tanio' Hingle and Kerry 'Fat Man' Hunter and tubist Kerwin James. Their debut 'D-Boy' (1997) was produced by Allen Toussaint, and the band has recorded several live Jazz Fest sets. Snare drummer Kerry Hunter was killed by a drunk driver on Mardi Gras morning 2024.
