Karen E. Spilka

As Senate President she is the presiding officer and most powerful member of the 40-seat Massachusetts Senate. She sets the calendar, assigns committee chairs, and negotiates final bills with the House Speaker and the Governor. Her own district is outside Boston, but she controls what Boston-filed legislation reaches a vote.
