Founded in 1867 by the American Missionary Association, it is one of Atlanta’s oldest historically Black churches and was closely tied to the founding of Atlanta University and Black education. Its congregation included many of Black Atlanta’s professional elite.

The Romanesque Revival building from 1908 housed social-service pioneers and Civil Rights-era leadership. It remains an active congregation near the Sweet Auburn district.
