About Kindred Stories
Kindred Stories is an independent bookstore in Houston's Third Ward, now housed in the historic Eldorado Ballroom building. Its shelves center books by Black authors and writers from other marginalized communities, along with gifts and stationery.
Founder Terri Hamm, a Howard University graduate and former teacher, launched the business in 2021 as an online shop and pop-up after years living abroad, then opened a storefront in 2022. She has said she chose a Black neighborhood on purpose. The store now runs about 30 events a month, including author talks, book clubs and a popular adult spelling bee, and it takes part in Houston's April independent bookstore crawl.
