\"Melpomene<\/p>

The Melpomene opened in 1964 in Central City, and it was later renamed the William J. Guste Sr. Homes, so most people know it today simply as the Guste Homes. But for generations, folks in the neighborhood called it the Melph, and the name still carries a deep sense of home.<\/p>

The development was large, with hundreds of apartments spread across ten city blocks, roughly bounded by South Robertson, Clio, Simon Bolivar, and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, which was once called Melpomene Avenue. It included a tall high-rise tower, a building for elderly residents, and a group of low-rise buildings, giving the Melph its own skyline in the heart of Central City.<\/p>

Built for working families who needed a decent, affordable place to live, the Melpomene became a real community. Grandmothers watched the block, kids filled the courtyards, and neighbors treated each other like family. Corner stores, churches, and schools nearby tied everyone together, and people took pride in where they were from.<\/p>

Central City has always been a cultural heartbeat of New Orleans, and the Melph was right in the middle of it. Second lines rolled through the streets, Mardi Gras Indians and social aid and pleasure clubs kept the traditions alive, and music was everywhere. Kids grew up surrounded by brass bands and the rhythms of the city, and many carried that culture into their own lives.<\/p>

Like the other projects, the Melpomene saw hard years during the drug era, and the buildings aged and needed repair. The news often told only the worst stories. But the people who grew up there remember the block parties, the cookouts, the ballgames, and the family bonds far more than anything else.<\/p>

Here is where the Guste story stands apart from most of the old projects. Instead of being torn down and erased, Guste was rebuilt and kept alive. Over the years the Housing Authority renovated and modernized the community, replacing worn-out buildings while keeping the neighborhood in place. Today Guste is still an active community, home to many Central City families who have lived there for generations.<\/p>

That continuity is a source of real pride. The Melph did not disappear the way so many other developments did. It changed and modernized, but the community held on, and families who grew up there can still point to the place they came from. The name Melpomene and the name Guste both carry that history.<\/p>

Everyday life at the Melph was built on family. People who grew up there talk about the whole neighborhood raising them, the elders on the stoops, and the friends who became lifelong family. Sports, church, and music filled the days, and the Melph produced its share of athletes, musicians, and community leaders who carried Central City pride wherever they went.<\/p>

Because Guste is still standing, the story is not only about the past. Families who have lived there for two, three, and even four generations still call it home today. That living connection makes the Melph special among the old developments, and it gives its history a future as well as a past.<\/p>

Over the years the community kept its own traditions, from block parties to holiday gatherings, and residents organized to make sure their voices were heard in how Guste is run. That spirit of standing up for the neighborhood has been part of the Melph from the very beginning, and it is a big reason the community is still here today.<\/p>
